How You Can Save Money on Furniture Hires

Hiring people to move your belongings can be a stressful prospect, especially when you are already facing the problem of buying or renting a new home and all of the expenses that go with it. Don't worry, you can have a seamless moving experience with the pros, and save money at the same time. Just take a few extra steps on the outset, and you'll save your moving company time, which will save you money.

Since you'll be doing much of the packing and labour yourself, it's best to get started right away. The more time you have, the less stressful this whole process will be:

Step 1: Take an Inventory

When you call the movers for an estimate, they walk from room to room and estimate the amount of boxes they'll need, and how much space your belongings will take. Before your inventory, use this opportunity to take an additional inventory: what you can afford to get rid of before the move. Separate these items into another area, and let your mover know these are not their concern. The less they have to deal with, the less you will have to spend.

Step 2: Gather Your Boxes

Since you're looking to save money on this project, why would you waste money on boxes and packing materials? Grab and stash any newspapers you can find, and recruit your neighbours to let you "recycle" their copies. Then, stop by any liquor stores, grocers, and bookstores and ask what they do with their boxes. Try to score as much of what you'll need for free as possible, and then buy or rent the rest so that you are prepped for packing day.

Step 3: Recruit the Troops

Throw a packing party! This is the perfect time to get rid of some of those belongings you won't be taking with you. Give them to friends and family who will use them. Choose a date on your calendar that makes sense for you, but also is likely to leave as many of your friends, family, and coworkers free to help you as much as possible. People are much more likely to help if they don't have to take off work or change their plans to do so. Be sure to offer bribery in the form of food and beer, and put on some great tunes.

Now, put on a pot of coffee, and be ready to show your gratitude. Your key to saving money on your furniture hire will be arriving any moment!

I am just someone who wanted to improve the space in which they live and who had to learn all kinds of crazy new skills to do so. Thankfully, my dad and my brother are both expert DIY guys, so they gave me a lot of help and support during the renovation project. I love my home now and I want to help others to love theirs.
